8.5 /10 Excellent

The Short Answer

  • Reolink wins on value and local control
  • Eufy wins on no-subscription wireless
  • Arlo wins on ecosystem integration and premium hardware design

The longer answer depends entirely on your priorities, and that’s what this guide is for.

Image Quality Comparison

We tested each brand’s flagship 2026 offering on identical mounts under identical conditions.

Cameras Tested

  • Reolink RLC-823A (4K PoE)
  • Arlo Pro 5S (2K QHD battery)
  • Eufy SoloCam S340 (3K dual-lens battery)

Daylight Performance

Winner: Reolink: The 4K sensor at this price point captures meaningfully more detail. In our standard license-plate-at-40-feet test, the Reolink was readable at 40ft, Eufy at 30ft, Arlo at 25ft.

Note: The Arlo Pro 5S is marketed with “2K QHD” (2560×1440), Eufy SoloCam S340 with “3K” (2880×1620). These are legitimate resolutions, not marketing fabrications, but raw 4K does deliver more pixel density for detail capture.

Night Vision Performance

Winner: Tie (Reolink/Eufy)

CameraNight ModeColor Night RangeIR Range
Reolink RLC-823AColor spotlight + IR45ft100ft
Arlo Pro 5SColor night vision (CVN)30ft
Eufy SoloCam S340Dual-spotlight40ft80ft

Arlo’s Color Night Vision is interesting, it uses a more sensitive sensor to capture color in near-darkness without a visible spotlight. The trade-off is lower resolution in that mode. For areas where stealth is important (neighbor-facing cameras), Arlo’s approach has merits. For maximum identification quality, spotlight-based approaches win.

Subscription Costs: 5-Year Comparison

This is where the analysis gets most consequential for most buyers.

Single Camera, 5-Year Cost

BrandHardwareAnnual Sub5-Year Total
Reolink (local NVR)$70 camera + $150 NVR = $220$0$220
Eufy (no sub)$130 camera$0$130
Eufy (with HomeBase)$130 + $100 HomeBase$0$230
Arlo (Essential)$100 camera$0 (basic only)$100
Arlo (Smart)$180 camera$79.99/yr × 5 = $400$580
Ring (Video Doorbell)$100$59.99/yr × 5 = $300$400

5-Camera System, 5-Year Cost

SystemHardware5-Year Sub5-Year Total
Reolink 4K NVR Kit~$450$0$450
Eufy w/ HomeBase~$750$0$750
Arlo Pro 5S × 5~$900$79.99 (covers 5) × 5 = $400$1,300
Ring × 5~$500$99.99/yr × 5 = $500$1,000

The subscription math is brutal at scale. Reolink with an NVR costs less than 3 years of Arlo Smart for 5 cameras, and provides equivalent or better functionality.

App & Ecosystem Comparison

Rating: 7.5/10

Functional but showing its age. The app works reliably across iOS and Android, but the UI is dense and non-intuitive for new users. Positive developments in the 2025-2026 cycle:

  • Redesigned dashboard with camera grid view
  • Improved playback timeline
  • Better notification management

Still lacks: geofencing, smart home routines, HomeKit support (limited beta only).

Arlo App

Rating: 9.0/10

The best security camera app in the consumer segment. Arlo’s app is polished, responsive, and feature-complete. The Activity Zones UI is particularly good, drawing exclusion zones by finger on a phone screen is intuitive.

  • Works with: Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, SmartThings, IFTTT
  • Geofencing for automatic arm/disarm
  • Mode scheduling
  • E2E encryption option for local storage

Eufy Security App

Rating: 8.0/10

Cleaner than Reolink, not quite at Arlo’s level. The recent 2025 redesign significantly improved navigation. HomeBase 3 owners get a good local NVR experience within the app. The AI detection and event search tools are above average.

Works with: Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, IFTTT.

Smart Home Integration

For smart home users: Arlo’s ecosystem depth is unmatched. It’s the only camera system of the three with full HomeKit Secure Video, Alexa Guard integration, and SmartThings compatibility.

For local-control users: Reolink’s RTSP and ONVIF support allow integration with Blue Iris, Frigate, Home Assistant, and virtually any security software. Eufy specifically blocks third-party RTSP access (a deliberate product decision to drive HomeBase dependency).

Privacy & Security Analysis

Our network analysis team monitored each camera system’s outbound traffic for 14 days.

  • Video streams encrypted (DTLS/SRTP)
  • Telemetry data sent to Reolink servers in China (anonymized, per their policy)
  • RTSP option enables fully local operation with no cloud dependency
  • Open source NVR clients available for full local control

Arlo

  • E2E encryption available for Arlo Smart subscribers
  • Cloud-processed AI detection (footage sent to cloud for analysis unless local mode enabled)
  • US-based infrastructure
  • Clear privacy policy with opt-outs

Eufy

  • Historical note: Eufy faced significant privacy criticism in 2022-2023 for sending thumbnails to cloud without disclosure. They have since addressed this with architectural changes.
  • Current status: on-device AI processing confirmed via network analysis, AI clips are processed locally
  • HomeBase mode with internet disabled works fully locally
  • RTSP disabled (by design), requires HomeBase for local NVR access

Who Should Buy Each Brand

  • You want the best value-per-dollar
  • You’re building a wired PoE system
  • You want complete local control (RTSP/ONVIF)
  • You’re comfortable with a slightly technical setup
  • Subscription costs are a priority concern

Choose Eufy if:

  • You want wireless cameras with no subscription
  • Apple HomeKit integration matters
  • You want good AI without cloud dependency
  • You prefer a polished app experience
  • You’re OK without RTSP/third-party integration

Choose Arlo if:

  • App experience and ecosystem integration are top priorities
  • You’re heavily invested in Alexa, Google, or Apple ecosystems
  • You want the best color night vision without spotlight
  • Premium hardware design and US-based support matter
  • You’re willing to pay for the subscription convenience

Our Verdict

In 2026, the “right” brand depends entirely on your priorities. For raw value and local control, Reolink has no serious competition. For wireless without subscriptions, Eufy is uniquely positioned. For ecosystem integration and app quality, Arlo remains the benchmark despite its subscription costs.

The good news: all three produce reliable, high-quality cameras that will serve you well. The differences are at the margins of a fundamentally mature product category.
